How to put mp3 ringtones onto LG Chocolate Spin (8550)

I found this cool ‘hack’ from HERE.

What you need:
1(a). Audacity (optional) : used to splice audio tracks … need ringtone to be 30 seconds or less
1(b). Or an online ringtone maker like makeownringtone.com (user friendly)
2. BitPim : used to transfer data between your phone and computer
3. USB cord : used to physically connect phone to your computer

What to do:
1. splice track with Audacity and export as MP3. You will need to install LAME MP3 encoder separately (found @ Audacity site). Or you can use an online ringtone maker
2. Install BitPim
3. Connect phone to computer via USB
4. Open BitPim and go to ‘Settings’ / ‘Preferences’ and select your phone from the Drop-down menu or use the wizard and close window
5. Click on ‘View’ and select ‘View Filesystem’ (This will allow you to browse the phone’s data structure)
6. On the left menu click on ‘Filesystem’
7. For LG 8550 go to ‘/brew/shared/ringtone/’
8. Drag the ringtone you created into this folder and let it transfer.
9. You may have to restart your phone for it to recognize the new ringtone.

  1. Megan Said,

If you have the VX8550 and not the newer version do you just drag and drop the ringtone into the Filesystem folder?

  2. Megan Said,

Sorry about that it is a VX8500

  3. Shaun Said,

I believe the 8500 and 8550 are based on a similar Filesystem structure.
If you can not drag it into the folder then right click and select ‘new file’ and browse to the mp3 ringtone. Remember you need to put it in ‘/brew/shared/ringtone/.
If you put it in the main Ringtone Folder on the left menu then you will get a ‘non-protected file’ error and wont be able to play that ringtone.

  4. Brows Said,

The http://makeownringtone.com site allows you to cut out a portion of your MP3 and make it into a ringtone for free. And it’s a bit less complicated than using Audacity.

  5. Shaun Said,

Thanks for the suggestion. I will update the post to include it.

  7. Curits Said,

First of all thanks for the help Shaun. I did follow the instructions and I do see the ringtone which I uploaded into the folder /brew/shared/ringtone/, but it wouldn’t play. It’s less than 30 secs and its in mp3 file format.

  8. Shaun Said,

You’re welcome Curits, are you receiving any error message? If so, what is it?
Also, have you tried playing the mp3 on your computer to make sure it works?

  9. andrew Said,

for the people having trouble getting bitpim to recognize their LG 8550’s make sure you dont push the “USB mass storage” button (on your phone). Otherwise BitPim won’t recognize your phone.

  10. Matt Said,

Hey. When I try to connect to the phone by going into the filesystem I get the error message “Failed to auto-detect the port in use. I couldn’t detect any candidate ports”
Any ideas on how to get it working?
    Thanks a bunch : )

  11. me2downhere Said,

hey shaun how do yu add video using bitpim what area do yu put it in my LGvx 8550

  12. me2downhere Said,

oh i forgot to mention how do yu download games to it also

  13. Shaun Said,

    RE: me2downhere
In regards to videos, I have not tried this yet. But I would assume you put them in “/brew/shared/myvideo”. Also, you can transfer video files via Bluetooth or USB and send them to the video folder.
Note: You will notice that the video files created by your phone are .3g2, which are playable in Quicktime.
I’m not sure of any good software for converting other video formats to .3g2 though.
I’ll have to look into that.

In regards to games, I have tried this many times with free games available online and no luck. I believe the best approach would be to purchase a game first then see how it changes the “/brew/ams/” folder. From what I have read and looked through, ‘ams’ directory is where all the application data is stored. Each application is designated its own folder (i.e. 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 on my phone) within ‘ams’ directory and each application is linked in the ‘ams/db’ directory (specifically folderInfo, executionInfo, and contentInfo).
Again I have not tried this myself because I am too cheap to purchase a game.
If you would like to try it please go ahead and provide me with the before and after “/brew/db” folder I would love to figure it out.

    Good luck

  14. Shaun Said,

    RE: Matt
How are you connecting your phone to your system?
If you connect via USB, make sure NOT to enable USB Mass Storage on your phone. This will disrupt the connectivity to BitPim.

  15. me2downhere Said,

under the filesystem ,brew i have the following folders(((media, mif, mod, sys. nothing that contains shared my videos, i do have a software that converts to 3gp2,that is imtoo3gp video converter
but still i cant find a folder to put the videos i convert into ,let me know what yu figure out

  16. me2downhere Said,

ps i dont have mass storage enables

  17. Brent Said,

I have the same problem as Matt. And no, mass storage is not enabled. When I click on filesystem, I get a folder icon with a backslash, clicking on that gives that message. Can’t get further than that. Anyone come across this?

  18. Shaun Said,

    RE: me2downhere
I’ve added a new post “Put video onto your LG Chocolate” which describes the methods for transferring.
But in regards to transferring via BitPim: have you tried transferring ringtones onto your phone?
If so, the video folder should be in the same location.

    RE: Brent and Matt
did you select your phone from “Phone Type” in BitPim preferences?

  19. me2downhere Said,

my ringtone folder is in brew/mod/10889 theres no video or any other folder in here

  20. Shaun Said,

    RE: me2downhere

It looks like you have a LG Voyager and the folders are as follows:

    Images: /brew/mod/10888/
    Video: /brew/mod/10890/
    Ringtones: /brew/mod/10889/ringtones/
    Music: /brew/mod/10889/
    Sounds: /brew/mod/18067/
    Flash: /flash/ui/
    SD Memory Card: /mmc1/

  27. Johnson Said,

This is a newbie error probably – but i decided not to use audacity and went with the online ringtone maker. Once i’ve finished i click make a ringtone and then download. When i click download it simply opens it with window media player… and gives me no option to save it whatsoever. is there any way to avoid this and actually save the file to my computer?

  28. Heather Said,

How to put mp3 ringtones onto LG Chocolate Spin (8550) for TELUS Users

Graham, Matt, Brent: FINALLY, I got it to work, HOPE IT WORKS FOR YOU!!!!!!
I am a TELUS user, I have an LG chocolate 8550 spin
Here’s what I did after reading millions of blogs!

    1) Installed BitPim (duh)
    2) Received bane-of-my-existence error message “Failed to auto-detect the port in use. I couldn’t detect any candidate ports” when trying to open the FileSystem folder
    3) download and install the LG USB Modem Driver (.exe file) for the 8550 at http://www.radarsync.com/driver/d225368-lge_cdma_usb_modem
    4) download and install the LG USB Modem Driver PATCH (.msi file) at:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/80091560/LGDP_VX8550_DLL_Ver_0_0_24_0.zip.html
    5) Plug USB cord into computer, plug into phone (not sure if this matters)
    6) don’t press anything on phone
    7) Window will pop up: “Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard”, I selected “Yes, this time only”, hit next, window says “this wizard helps you install software for “LGE CDMA USB Modem”, click “Install the software automatically (Recommended)”, hit “next”, the wizard searches for awhile, a window pops up …something about windows logo recognition, just click “continue anyways” when it asks you
    8) then VOILA! the window will read: “Competing the Found new hardware wizardd. The wizard has finished installing the software for LGE CDMA USB Modem” CLICK FINISH
    9) then a speech bubble from the system tray@ bottom right of screen says: “found new hardware, your new hardware is ready to use…”(or says something like that)
    10) Open BitPim ( I was using version 1.0.5 btw)
    11) When BitPim opens, a box opens and says: “Fond other CDMA phone on COM4″, click OK
    12) Click Filesystem on the leftmost side, then on the folder with the backslash in the middle pane and yaaaaaaaay, it works!!! (HOPEFULLY for you too!)
    13) stick in your mp3’s in brew/shared/ringtone
    14) close bitpim, restart phone to recognize new ringtonw (must do this)
    15) ps,…on my second try, I repeated the thing with the hardware wizard and will try in a bit to transfer a ringtone after pressing cancel when i plug the phone in and the hardware-wizard window pops up

Crossing my fingers for you guys….

  29. Heather Said,

oh, and i’m using windows XP
